Flowers of the Philippines

A Selection of Botanical Illustrations

Catch a Glimpse of the Blooms!

A peek into one of the most megadiverse-countries comprising a large number of flower species found nowhere else in the world.

This work highlights a collection of 200 select flowering plants that are found in the country, of which 137 are native to the Philippines and other countries of the ASEAN.

Few of the flower species covered in the book include the Philippine Rose, Persian Lilac, Palawan Melastoma, Pukinggan, Balayong, Apitong, Black Bat Flower, amongst several others. Each flower genus has been divided into their scientific name, family, and common names.

The Author and Illustrator

Domingo A. Madulid

The Author

Domingo A. Madulid obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of the Philippines, Master of Science from the University of Santo Tomas, and Master of Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy (Botany) from the University of Reading, United Kingdom.

He was a former Science and Technology Committee member and Philippine Expert’s Panel for World Heritage of UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines. He has written several research articles published in local and international journals. Among his national book awards include A Pictorial Cyclopedia of Philippine Ornamental Plants (1995), A Dictionary of Philippine Plant Names(2001), and Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas, 5th Edition (2018). He is the founding president of the Association of Systematic Biologists of the Philippines and the former president of the Philippine Association of Career Scientists.

He is a Professorial Lecturer at the De La Salle University Biology Department. He was a former Curator II and Scientist IV of the Botany Division of the Philippine National Museum. His research interests include the Flora of the Philippines, the taxonomy of Philippine palms, cycads, Rafflesia, ethnobotany, medicinal plants, historical botany, and ornamental plants. He and other authors have discovered 23 new species of plants from the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Several plants have been named after him, including Hoya madulidii, Begonia madulidii, and Epithema madulidii.

Gizzele Delos Santos-Eustaquio

The Illustrator

Gizzele Delos Santos-Eustaquio is a freelance artist. Her works are inspired mainly by floral art in watercolors. Her intricately rendered artworks paved the way for her to be invited to be an illustrator for this book.

She became proficient in botanical illustrations mainly through self-study but also received valuable coaching and close supervision from the author during the preparation of this book; she is a licensed Medical Technologist by profession and served as a dedicated healthcare practitioner in hospitals and clinical laboratories in the Philippines but became a freelance artist in the latter part of her career, deciding to pursue her passion for art.

Gizzele is looking to further her involvement in botanical artworks in the future and to help promote knowledge and public appreciation of Southeast Asia's diverse and outstanding flora.

About the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) was established in 2005 and is an extended arm of ASEAN to challenge biodiversity loss. It is an intergovernmental organization that facilitates cooperation and coordination among the ten ASEAN Member States (AMS) and the regional and international organizations on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.

Driven by preservation of biodiversity in the ASEAN region, their mission is to facilitate regional cooperation and deliver capacity building services to the AMS in conserving biodiversity.

Quick Note on ASEAN

ASEAN is an abbreviation for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. They collectively represent ~10 states in the Southeast Asia region with a collective population of over 600 million people. Their primary objective is to accelerate economic growth, manage social progress, and take care of the cultural development in the region.

Their motto is “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
